Ingredients

  • ¼ cup flour
  • 3 tbsp Dutch process cocoa
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 3 tbsp buttermilk
  • 3 tbsp applesauce
  • 4½ tsp canola oil
  • 1 tsp espresso powder
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 5 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • Vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare Pan: Line a 6-inch cake pan with parchment paper. Spray with cooking spray and dust with flour. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and baking soda
  2. Mix Batter: In a large bowl, vigorously whisk egg and sugar until light and fluffy. Gently fold in dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk, applesauce, and oil. Stir in chopped chocolate
  3. Bake Cake: Place in air fryer and bake at 320°F / 160°C for 25 minutes. Test center with toothpick - it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs
  4. Prepare Frosting: In a small saucepan, cook butter over medium heat until golden brown and nutty smelling. Let cool 10 minutes. Beat with honey, a splash of vanilla, and powdered sugar until smooth
  5. Decorate: Once cake is completely cool, spread with brown butter frosting. Optional: sprinkle extra chocolate shavings on top
